APFF guest, Janusz Zaorski, presents at the University of Texas at Austin on Monday, October 17 at 4pm

“Generations” (Pokolenia) is a full-length docudrama made for the anniversary of the renowned Feature Film Studio in Wroclaw, Poland (Wytwórnia Filmów Fabularnych we Wrocławiu). It is a story of contemporary Poland told using fragments of works created at the studio. They include the period of Stalinist terror, “our little stabilization”, March 1968, unfulfilled expectations of the Gierek era, when martial law was enacted in 1981, and the roundtable negotiations of 1989. The film's narrator is renowned Polish actor from the 1950s, Zbyszek Cybulski, who guides us around the contemporary flim studio and city of Wroclaw.

The director, Janusz Zaorski, will introduce the film and answer questions after. Janusz Zaorski is a Polish film director, scenarist and actor, representative of the "cinema of moral concern" movement (kino moralnego .

‘Dekalog’: Where Biblical Law and Polish Cinematography Meet

Wall Street Journal article about Krzysztof Kieslowski's films.

"Kieślowski made “Dekalog” for Polish television, but it is stirringly cinematic. Now digitally restored, this profound and monumental work is opening on Friday at the IFC Center in New York, the Music Box Theatre in Chicago and Cinéma du Parc in Montreal, followed by other cities. On Sept. 27, the Criterion Collection will also release the cycle on DVD and Blu-ray. "

APFF partners with AFS to honor the 20th anniversary of Krzysztof Kieslowski's death

Krzysztof Kieslowski (1941-1996) is Poland’s best-known master director, a compassionate teller of humanist stories during Poland’s communist period. 2016 marks the 20th anniversary of Kieslowski’s passing, but also an important year for his fans, as the director’s 10-part television masterpiece THE DECALOGUE will finally be available in a digitally restored version later in the fall. To mark this, AFS, in partnership with the Austin Polish Film Festival, will exhibit the full digital restoration of THE DECALOGUE (on a new DCP print), two episodes each week. We’ll also feature another Kieslowski extended work, THREE COLORS: BLUE, WHITE & RED, a French feature trilogy that he intended to be experienced as a single piece. These films are Kieslowski's final works as a director, completed just a few years before his death in 1996. BLUE, WHITE & RED will each be exhibited on a 35mm print.
